“Potheads”...a not too hazy vision.

A new collection of sculpted clay pots by
Cindy Clarke
Out of the Fire Studio owner and resident potter Cindy Clarke's latest three dimensional art pieces, are quite literally “Potheads” While the name may conjure up a hazy vision of misspent youth, in this case the subjects are not quite so hazy. Starting with a simple vase thrown on the potter’s wheel Cindy then alters, sculpts, and constructs a bust with full features and expressions, some coloured with glazes and some not, creating a collection of personages fired in the kiln into stone sculpture. Each piece is totally unique. Cindy speaks of the characters as they are revealed as “wanting to have” the expression or features that develop. She feels she is just helping to reveal the character that is in that particular piece of clay.
Cindy Clarke has worked in clay for forty years, starting as a child playing in her mother’s garden in Dawson Creek B.C. She always told anyone who would listen that she was going to be a potter, and followed through with courses both informal and formal into her young adult life. She was instrumental in the establishment of the pottery and ceramics facility at Northern Lights College in Dawson Creek, instructing there for some time. While in Dawson Creek she built her first pottery studio. In 1999 she moved to Edson where she established “Out of the Fire Studio” a production pottery facility. She and Jim Willett relocated the studio to Edmonton in 2001 and it grew to where the couple produced over ten tons of pottery a year for over forty retailers across western Canada as well as hundreds of retail customers around the world via the internet. A realization of the loss of art for the sake of production led to a change of direction, and in late 2006 Cindy and Jim downsized the studio, relocating to the Jasper Avenue location, and opened the gallery in January of 2007, featuring the work of various artists and artisans as well as Cindy’s pottery.
Cindy has now entered a new phase in her career. Having become a master at the wheel, she is bringing the fun and art back into her creations. Instead of a round pot being the final product of her efforts, the pot is just the beginning of the piece.
The show ended May 3rd, but we are sure we will have potheads with us for a long time!
